Factories are harsh environments that need to comply with severe norms of quality and safety to execute their production process. The incorporation of sensitive and fragile IT equipment that requires cabling solutions into smart factories might represent a big challenge, since the deployment of inappropriate components and low-quality products that fails to accomplish the required standards, might put in danger the whole factory operation and can result in a catastrophic commercial and economic consequences.
ISO and IEC are the organizations that work together to adjust and provide the international standards for the deployment of the cabling systems. A new norm has been added due to the necessity of special application scenarios of the factory, this new norm is the ISO/IEC 11801-3. This standard combines the generic cabling system norm ISO/IEC 11801 adding the part of the industrial cabling system.

This industrial cabling system creates the Industrial Intermediate Distributor (IID) which can be connected between the Floor Distributors (FD) and the Automation island. To assure the performance of the transmitted signals, this norm includes 3 transmission channels configurations:
Channels with no connections: Intermediate cabling channel and a floor distribution channel created without intermediate connections.

Channels using balanced cabling bulkhead connections: intermediate cabling channel and a floor distribution channel created using a fixed cable terminated at a closure bulkhead. In industrial and outdoor applications, all components and devices should offer better and advanced resistance to environmental conditions. In the cabling area, the term MICE refers to the generic cabling standards developed by ISO/IEC related to the classification of the environmental circumstances where cabling systems are going to be deployed to ensure the proper function and operation of the cables and their applications. The letters in MICE represent one type of environmental impact, Mechanical, Ingress, Climatic/Chemical Electromagnetic, and for each environmental impact exist three levels that reflect the severity of the conditions, where level 1 represent low impact M1I1C1E1 and level three represent the harshest environments M3I3C3E3
